Is It Really Time to Replace Your Heater?

Is It Really Time to Replace Your Heater?

The performance of your heating system may suffer for many reasons. Anything from a dirty air filter to faulty wiring to a damaged blower fan could be at fault if you are not getting the full level of heating you expect this winter.

Of course, sometimes the problem is much larger. No heating system will last forever, and replacement is inevitable. How can you tell whether it is time to replace your furnace (or heat pump) or not?

A High Quote for Repairs

You call in technicians to resolve your heating issues, and they let you know that repairs will cost hundreds of dollars. Yikes! Is it worth it?

It may be. But if you have an older heating system that’s nearing the end of its life anyway, spending hundreds of dollars to fix it doesn’t make much sense. The other components of the heater are bound to be failing too, which means they may break soon enough.

In the end, you spend far too much money to put a patch on a system that is doomed to fail. We typically recommend replacement if a repair will be about half the price of a new system, or if the system was improperly sized and repairs will not hold up.

Old Age

When a heating system reaches about 15 years of age, it becomes less and less efficient and more likely to break down when you need it. Replacing a heating system as early in the heating season as possible means you are less likely to have to deal with sudden mid-winter breakdowns that call for emergency heating service.

In addition, your new heater should operate more reliably and more efficiently, meaning a lower operating cost that eventually offsets the price of that new system. Save yourself some stress and replace an older, unreliable heater before it fails!

Safety Concerns

Finally, if you or your technicians notice any potential safety concerns within the heating system—particularly if it uses combustion to operate (like a natural gas furnace does)—it’s time for a replacement. Putting off heating replacement is not worth the risk of a carbon monoxide or gas leak.
