Should I Worry about Loud Water Heater Noises?

When a water heater makes loud noises, you may become alarmed. It’s important to take notice when the systems in your home are not working properly so that they can get the attention they need. But the sounds from your water heater may be more worrisome than other problems you’ve encountered.

Many people worry that their water heaters could shut down or even explode when they hear a rumbling or banging noise at startup. Thankfully, this probably isn’t the case thanks to built-in safety switches that prevent these types of dangerous situations. However, it is still a problem that requires a plumber to take a look.

What It Means

Loud noises from a water heater—especially those that sound like a rumbling or even a banging—could indicate that your water supply is full of minerals that may damage the plumbing.

Calcium and magnesium leave behind deposits in the tank (called scaling). These deposits can collect at the bottom of the water heater tank, settling there and creating a change in the pressure of the tank. Air bubbles attempt to rise at the top, and they burst at the top of the tank, causing that loud sound.

It Could Cause Damages

There have been cases of poorly installed water heaters with malfunctioning safety switches exploding in the past. However, this is not a common problem. What’s more likely is that your water heater will break down completely or leak—all due to a collection of sediment at the bottom of the tank.

The sediment at the bottom of the tank may allow for a faster corrosion rate, meaning your tank water heater may be out-of-order long before its lifespan should be up. You might even have water leaking all over your floor. Alternatively, the water heater may keep shutting off, as the tank pressure changes and activates a safety switch. It’s important that you call technicians as soon as you hear anything strange from your hot water tank.
