Test Your Toilet for Leaks Today

We understand that other people don’t think about how toilets work as much as plumbers do. However, in California, water is a major issue. And each time you flush your toilet, you use a whole lot of water.

Older toilets can use 3.5 gallons of water or even more than 5 gallons with every flush. However, toilets installed in the 1990s and later use about 1.6 gallons of water per flush.

That’s a major improvement. But when there are leaks in your toilet, those numbers go back up. It’s so important to tackle these leaks so that you can help to conserve water and keep your bills low.

Detecting Toilet Leaks

You may be thinking, “Wouldn’t I be able to notice a toilet leak?” However, toilets don’t always leak water on the floor when they leak. More commonly, there is a leak between the tank and the bowl, at the point where water refills the bowl, that uses so much extra water.

Sometimes, you’ll hear water running, even though you have not just flushed the toilet. Other times, you might notice that your toilet is flushing for longer than it should, or taking a long time to refill. In any case, it’s a good idea to do a thorough test for a leaky tank.

The Dye Tab Test

If you want to be able to tell for sure that your toilet is leaking, you can get a dye tab test. Your local plumber likely has dye tabs available for testing. Or, you could use a few drops of food coloring. Drop dye tablets into the tank (or have a plumber do this), and wait ten minutes. If color has leaked into the bowl, you have a leak, and likely need a flapper valve replacement.

Other Water Efficiency Issues with a Toilet

If you’re concerned about water usage in an older toilet, it may be time for an upgrade. No matter how well the toilet flapper is sealing, an older toilet uses too many gallons per flush. Upgrade to a low-flush toilet to save some money each month.
