When Is It Necessary to Hydro-Jet Your Drains?

When Is It Necessary to Hydro-Jet Your Drains?

One of our favorite investments in our plumbing business is the hydro jetter. Hydro jetters are able to do the tough jobs that traditional drain cleaning methods simply cannot. That said, it’s not always the first choice for all drain clogs. And sometimes, you might think this method is unnecessary.

So when should you schedule hydro jetting for your drains? We’ll get into that below, after a brief overview of the process. To really determine whether your drains are in need of hydro jetting service, contact your local plumbers for an assessment of your pipes.

How Hydro Jetting Works

The way hydro jetting works may seem simple, but you must have a specialist do the work if you want to ensure it’s done properly. A plumber will feed a thin, high-pressure hose through your sewer pipes. The hose has a nozzle that sprays out water at all 360° of its head. That means that all parts of the pipelining are blasted with water, and the impact can clear gunk out of the inside of the pipe.

Hydro Jetting Clears Drains Better

When there’s a major clog in your drains and sewer line, a plumber could pull it out with a drain auger. This will remove the clog, but it still leaves behind all of the other stuck-on residue lining the pipes. The sludge and grease in your drains can stick to pipes, allowing waste to collect until it forms another clog, potentially in only a short time.

Hydro jetting blasts away debris and that stuck on residue that develops in pipes over time. That means that your pipes are truly cleared, rather than just being free of major obstructions.

Is It Really Necessary?

Again, this is a question we cannot really answer without taking a look at your pipes. And often, hydro jetting isn’t necessary if you only want to remove a clog. However, it might be the better option in many cases. Clogs can only return again soon if you do not take the right steps. Hydro-jetting can remove and prevent clogs with a single service.

In fact, in many cases, it truly is the best option. You might need hydro jetting to blast away tree roots in pipes or to clear a tough clog that a drain auger cannot clear up, for example. Hydro jetting is also necessary before a trenchless sewer repair so there is a clean pipe for the new pipelining to adhere to.

What Are the Drawbacks of Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting does take a bit of extra time. With our service, we want to make sure that hydro jetting truly and thoroughly cleaned your drains. That’s why we can perform a video pipe inspection before and after hydro jetting service, adding to the timespan (especially if we find that the hydro jetter needs to go back through another time).

There are also times when hydro jetting is not the best option. It’s important to assess the pipes before choosing jetting service, since it may be that the pipe needs repair or that a different problem exists in the pipes that hydro jetting cannot solve.
