Which Air Conditioner Is Most Efficient?

A new air conditioner is a major investment. So when you find out that your old system is on its last legs, we think it’s important to look for the best new air conditioning system for your home. That means paying attention to details such as sizing requirements for your home, and the efficiency rating.

An efficient air conditioner is able to operate using the least amount of energy, meaning it keeps your bills low. Efficient technology is changing every year, so how can you find the system that’s right for your home?

Pick the right size for your house

An air conditioner is not a one-size-fits-all installation. And it also shouldn’t depend on how much money you have to spend on the right size within your price range. Rather, there is really only one size, in BTUs (British Thermal Units) for your home. It depends on a lot more factors than you think.

  • Square footage of the home
  • Whether there is sufficient insulation
  • The number of rooms
  • Window locations and shading around the house

Getting an air conditioner that is too small can force the air conditioner to work too hard in an attempt to reach the cooling levels that you need. That can overwork the system, drive up your bills, and force the air conditioner to stop working sooner than you expect.

But an air conditioner that is too large runs into problems as well. It can short cycle, running too frequently for short intervals, which can also cost a lot and wear out the compressor. Have a technician size your air conditioner for the right cooling load.

Look for the ENERGY STAR seal and these efficiency standards

Finding an air conditioner with the ENERGY STAR seal is easy, and we recommend this so that you know your system meets minimum standards for efficiency and performance as recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Comparing SEER ratings (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) can give you an even better idea of how well your air conditioner will perform. This number is an indicator of how efficiently an air conditioner performs in an average cooling period. The minimum SEER rating for air conditioners in our area is 14, but we recommend a SEER of 16 or higher for the best efficiency and comfort for the money.

Try these upgrades

Choosing a perfectly sized air conditioner with a high efficiency rating is only part of the equation. You might also look for some additional money-saving features to improve the way your air conditioner works.

A variable speed blower fan will automatically adjust fan output in order to provide the most accurate temperatures (within a couple of degrees of the thermostat setting at all times) without running up your bills. Wi-Fi thermostats offer up an excellent way to save energy, allowing you to make adjustments to the temperature settings in your home even when you are not there (right from your smart phone). Ask your technician for more advice about improving home efficiency this summer.
