Holiday Food Waste You Shouldn't Put down Your Disposal

Before It Goes Down The Drain, Make Sure It’s Safe For Your Disposal!

The holiday season is just around the corner and that means cooking lots of big meals for your family Thanksgiving feast in your Rancho Cucamonga area kitchen. Whether it’s turkey, ham, stuffing or mashed potatoes you’re sure to have lots of leftovers to fill your stomach and your fridge.

All of this food means that you’ll have plenty of scraps. You’ll probably want to get rid of any food that can’t be used, but not all food can be safely sent down the garbage disposal. Putting the wrong types of food down your disposal may result in you needing costly repairs, which is the last thing you should be worrying about during the holidays.

For your benefit, Allstar Home Services’ plumbers have compiled a list of holiday foods that may cause damage to your garbage disposal. Check out this list before you end up with an expensive plumbing problem.

1. Oils, Fats and Grease Cause Clogging

If you’re cooking a lot during the holidays, chances are you’ll have a good amount of grease leftover. It seems that putting oils, fats and grease down the drain would be logical because they are liquid-like, but these items will turn solid in your pipes, causing harmful clogging in your drains. To properly dispose of these food byproducts, simply collect them in a non-recyclable container and let them cool down, then discard the container with your normal garbage.

2. Stringy Foods Will Cause Disposal Blades IssuesWashing veggies while preparing dinner

Foods that are string or that are fibrous in nature can cause you a great deal of trouble. The stringy parts will get tangled in your disposal blades, causing jams and malfunctions. Avoid putting these fibery foods in your disposal:

  • Carrot peels
  • Celery
  • Potato skins
  • Asparagus
  • Corn husks

3. Beans, Pasta and Nuts will Block Your Drains

To avoid having clogging problems during you holidays, don’t put pasta or beans down your drains. These foods will cause sludge-like sediment to gather in your drains, which may require a drain cleaning service from the professional plumbers at Allstar Home Services. While we’d love to join your holiday festivities, it’s probably best to avoid these in your disposal:

  • Nuts
  • Coffee grounds
  • Pasta (which expands in water and causes blockage!)
  • Green beans

4. Animal Waste Will Create Septic System ProblemsMoney going down the drain (literally).

Don’t put any turkey bones from your holiday roast down the drain. The bigger bones will get stuck and the smaller bones may impair your garbage disposal, resulting in a visit from the professionals at Allstar Home Services for removal. Eggshells will create blockages within your pipe system that may lead to costly repairs. Avoid putting these foods down the drain:

  • Eggshells
  • Bones
  • Chicken and Turkey Skin
