Common Air Conditioner Problems

Common Air Conditioner Problems

Summer is hot and the air conditioner is running almost constantly. All of a sudden, something goes wrong. The A/C isn't doing its job right. Here are four common air conditioning problems that can occur:

1. The System Won't Turn On

If the entire system won't start, there are a couple of things to check:

  • Thermostat - Make sure the thermostat is on, it's set to cool, and the temperature is low enough. Also, if it uses batteries, replace them.

  • Breaker - If the thermostat appears to be working properly, check the breaker box. Make sure one hasn't tripped. If it has, reset it and try to turn the unit on.

2. The Air Isn't Getting Cold Enough

The A/C system is working, but the house isn't getting cold. Try two things:

  • Thermostat - Verify the thermostat is set low enough.

  • Air Filter - A clogged air filter prevents air from getting to the condenser coils, this makes it harder to keep the house cool.

3. It Turns On and Off Frequently

This is short cycling. It's often caused by clogged air filters. The air can't flow properly, which overheats the unit causing it to shut off to cool down before it tries to start again.

4. One Room Never Gets Cold Enough

Older homes often have one or two rooms that never get to a comfortable temperature. It can be caused by broken or leaking ducts. It might also be occurring due to poor placement of the thermostat.

Most of these air conditioning problems are easy to solve. However, if you find that you can't get the A/C to work properly, you need a professional. If you need any help with repairs, maintenance, or HVAC services, contact Allstar Plumbing, Heating & Air.
