How Does a Tank Water Heater Work?
The basics of a tank hot water heater are fairly straight–forward. At the top of the tank are three valves: one valve is the intake cold water valve, the second is for the dip tube and the third is to allow the hot water to flow from the top of the tank to your open hot water tap. The tank is equipped with sensors that tell the cold water intake valve when to open, but the water doesn’t flow directly from the valve into the water tank; it flows directly into the dip tube. This is so the dip tube can direct the cold water to the bottom of the tank for heating and prevent any mixing of the hot water at the top of the tank with the incoming cold water. The water at the bottom of the tank is heated by either a gas burner or electrical heating element, then rises to the top of the tank naturally for use.
Why Consider a Tank Water Heater?
With so many options on the market, it can be hard to determine what kind of hot water heater to choose. Here are some reasons why you may want to consider using a tank hot water heater in your home:
- Easier installation – tank units are typically less complicated to install than tankless or heat pump hot water heaters. However, this doesn’t mean they can be installed by just anyone: you should always hire an expert.
- Less initial expense – tank hot water heaters typically cost less than other types of hot water heaters to purchase and install.
- Wide variety of sizes – tank water heaters come in a wide variety of sizes, making it easy to find the right size to fit your home or commercial property.
